RAINFOREST HOLIDAY IN TANGKAHAN

TANGKAHAN

Tangkahan (the hidden paradise of Gunung Leuser National Park) is an ecotourism area in the Langkat district of North Sumatra, just two hours drive from Bukit Lawang. In the 1980's and 1990's, local people were actively illegally cutting down trees from the park for commercial timber. The people however, became aware of the damage they were causing, and collectively decided to stop and transform the area into an ecotourism destination.

LPT established an MoU with GNLP Management in April 2002, to manage the Tangkahan forest for ecotourism purposes. In addition, LPT developed CTO – Community Tour Operator system, providing accomodatiion and local guides for visitors. Tangkahan is also the base of the Consevation Response Unit (CRU), consisting of a team of ex-captive Sumatran Elephants and their mahouts (keepers) that patrol the forest to protect it against any encroachment. Here, visitors can enjoy elephant trekking through the forest.
